Sustainable Change

Now that you have understood the concepts of lifestyle change (and if you haven't, take the time to view our presentation "Eat better, live better"), the question you probably will be asking yourselves is "how sustainable is lifestyle change?" After all, we have all taken up exercising, only to stop a short while later. We have all gone on a diet, only to go off a diet. WHY? Because we are not angels. If we were, we wouldn't have incredibly powerful inclinations for hedonism. Who doesn't like the "good life" Breakfast in bed. Lazy Sundays. Fancy restaurants or even family diners. The truth is, we all do, and in my opinion so should we. Did I just read that right. A physician paving the way for me to continue my indulgent ways. Not really. My approach is simple and pragmatic. Without pizza, life is not worth living, if you are a pizza lover. Imagine being told that when you are 44 that you must eliminate pizza for the rest of your life, if you want to live to the ripe old age of 94. That's a bitter pill to swallow. Maybe I don't want to live to 94 if that's the case. Hold that thought, and consider living life on a spectrum. Some days we are good, lopsided on the side of angels as DH Lawrence would say. Very occasionally, we are darn right bad, arguing with our loved ones, forgetting to call when we 'know' that we will be late coming home, etc., but mostly we are some where in between. Using that same analogy, lifestyle change is sustainable when we set out knowing that we can keep life worth living so to speak, when we can very occasionally be bad, but make up for it by living on the spectrum.
